FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: group of inventions relates to devices for separation of fractions with lower and higher-density of a fluid sample, in particular, to versions of mechanical separator and to versions of separation unit for separation of fluid sample into a first and a second phase, including such mechanical separator. Mechanical separator for separation of fluid sample inside a sample container comprises a separator housing, generally having a spherical shape and a through-channel formed therein, ensuring passage of fluid. Separator housing comprises a float, having a first density, and a ballast, having a second density, different from first density, wherein part of float is connected to part of ballast at boundary surface and outer surface of float, adjacent to boundary surface and extending therefrom, is separated from corresponding external surface of ballast, adjacent to boundary surface and extending therefrom. According to another version of mechanical separator, at least part of float is connected to at least part of ballast at boundary surface, and in separator housing there is at least one slot adjacent to boundary surface. Separation unit for separation of fluid sample into a first and a second phase comprises a sample container, having a first end, a second end and sidewall extending therebetween, wherein longitudinal axis of sample container extends between first and second ends, shutoff element, configured for sealing interaction with first end of sample container, and mechanical separator, made according to one of above versions.

EFFECT: minimising mutual penetration of phases of a sample having higher and lower density.
