SUBSTANCE: invention relates to electrical engineering, in particular, to conversion equipment, and can be used to control voltage of converter transformers. Device for controlling voltage comprises a transformer, where in each phase intermediate output of primary winding is connected to beginning of thyristor switch, made from two anti-parallel connected thyristors, and end of primary winding is connected to a reactor, end of which is connected to end of thyristor switch, forming a common point connected to similar common points of other phases. Apparatus includes a control unit for thyristor switches of transformer windings of each phase. Method of controlling voltage when switching thyristor switches to increase voltage first comprises opening thyristor switch of one phase followed by successive connection of other and subsequent phases, and switching thyristor switches for voltage reduction is performed in reverse order.
