FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: silicon-containing cerium oxide complex is proposed, consisting of cerium, silicon and oxygen, containing 2-20 wt % of silicon in terms of SiO2, characterized by the method of its production, having a specific surface area of at least 40 m2/g, as measured by the BET method using nitrogen gas adsorption after calcination at 1000°C for 5 hours, and maintainability, which is a percentage of trivalent cerium in a complex oxide reduced from tetravalent cerium not lower than 30%, as calculated by the measurement of programmed temperature reduction from 50 to 900°C, after calcination at 1000°C for 5 hours. A method for preparation of the said composite oxide and the exhaust gas purifying catalyst using the composite oxidem are proposed as well.

EFFECT: oxide is capable of maintaining a large specific surface area even when used at high temperatures, has excellent heat resistance and recoverability.
