Cerium oxide particles have a specific surface area of 45 to 80 m2/g after calcination at 900°C for 5 hours in air and a specific surface area of 75 to 90 m2/g after calcination at 700°C for 4 hours in a gas atmosphere containing 10 vol.% О2, 10 vol.% Н2О, and the rest N2. Invention also relates to a method of synthesis of such cerium oxide particles and to an exhaust gas purification catalyst using said cerium oxide particles.

EFFECT: improved heat resistance and adsorption and desorption capacity.
