FIELD: engines and pumps.

SUBSTANCE: internal combustion engine is provided with variable compression ratio mechanism in a vehicle with automatic transmission (4). Target compression ratio tCR of variable compression ratio mechanism is determined with reference to compression ratio map, wherein the target value of compression ratio was previously determined using the requested load tT and speed Ne of the engine as parameters. Compression ratio map of reverse motion is selected when the automatic transmission is in reverse position; the first compression ratio map is selected when the actual transmission speed reduction ratio RR is low; and the second compression ratio map is selected when the actual transmission speed reduction ratio RR is low (S3-S7). Variable range of compression ratio control is narrower in the second compression ratio map for high ratio of speed reduction than in the first compression ratio map, and is narrower in the compression ratio map of the reverse motion than in the first and the second compression ratio maps.

EFFECT: exclusion of unintended torque change due to changes in compression ratio, when the speed reduction ratio is high.
