FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: method of producing a cobalt-containing catalyst for the synthesis of hydrocarbons provides, in the carbide formation step, treating a precursor catalyst comprising a catalyst support containing cobalt containing CO gas for no longer than 1 hour at the temperature T1, where T1 is of 200°C to 260°C for converting cobalt to calcium carbide, thereby producing a catalyst precursor containing cobalt carbide, the CO-containing gas (when it contains H2) is not characterized by the molar ratio of CO to H2, equal to or less than 33:1, and the carbide forming step is carried out under non-oxidizing conditions; and in the subsequent activation stage, the catalyst precursor containing cobalt carbide is subjected to hydrogen-containing gas treatment with hydrogen-containing gas at the temperature T2, where T2 is, at least, 300°C for converting carbide cobalt to metal cobalt, thus enabling the carbide containing the cobalt catalyst precursor and providing a cobalt containing catalyst for the synthesis of hydrocarbons. The method of producing hydrocarbons is also revealed, where the method includes containing cobalt catalyst and bringing in contact with carbon monoxide hydrogen at temperatures above 100°C and under pressure to, at least, 10 bar in the presence of the cobalt-containing hydrocarbon synthesis catalyst.

EFFECT: increasing the activity of the catalyst with respect to SFT and reducing the selectivity to methane.
