SUBSTANCE: method is carried out by means of a device for the controlled laying of reinforcing fiber bundles on a surface that includes a laying head and a controlled positioning unit to which the laying head is connected and by which the laying head can move relative to the surface. In this case, the laying device also includes means for providing at least one endless, ribbon-shaped reinforcing fiber bundle provided with a binder and a first transport device disposed on the laying head for transporting at least one endless ribbon-shaped reinforcing fiber bundle provided with a binder, to the packing head. Moreover, on the laying head, when viewed in the conveying direction, means for spreading at least one endless, ribbon-shaped tow is arranged in front of the first transport device. The laying head has a second transport device disposed in the transporting direction, after the first conveying device. The laying head has a longitudinal separation device disposed between the first and second conveying device, including at least one separating element for separating at least one bundle along its longitudinal extension into two or more pieces of the tow. Located in the transporting direction after the second transport device is a lateral separation assembly for transversely dividing two or more pieces of bundles into bundles of fibers.

EFFECT: increase in the volume fraction of fibers in fibrous preforms.
