FIELD: oil and gas industry.

SUBSTANCE: embodiments of the invention generally refer to isolated magnetic units, methods for gap purging between the isolating holder of the magnetic unit and a part of the machine, to rotary machines and oil and gas processing plants. The isolated magnetic unit comprises of at least one pole piece (61) and an isolating holder (3), wherein at least one part of the holder (3) is adjacent to at least one pole piece (61). In the holder (3), at least one recess (5) is arranged adjacent to at least one part of the holder (3) to create a fluid flow. At least one recess (5) has a shape, conducive to fluid flow, and, preferably, has a chamfered inlet and/or a chamfered outlet portion. A portion of the pole pieces (61) has the first dimension, and the other part of the pole pieces (61) has the second dimension that is larger than the indicated first dimension. A method is also provided for the gap purging between the isolating holder (3) of said magnetic unit and the machine part, including the following steps of: providing the isolating collar (3) with one or more recesses (5) disposed adjacent to the gap; ensuring that there is a differential pressure in one or more recesses (5); creating a fluid flow in one or more recesses (5). Typically, the magnetic unit is a magnetic bearing.

EFFECT: improved performance in terms of gas purging in the gap, as well as cooling of magnetic units.
