SUBSTANCE: proposed group of inventions includes development devices comprising a developer transfer element for transferring the developer including a toner and a magnetic medium for developing a latent image formed on the mentioned image transfer element. The mentioned developer transfer element includes a surface having a plurality of grooves extending in the longitudinal direction, a magnet provided inside the mentioned developer transfer element to attract the developer to the surface of the mentioned developer transfer element, a non-magnetic adjusting element provided at a distance from the mentioned developer transfer element to adjust the amount of developer carried on the mentioned developer transfer element. Quantity M/S (mg/mm²) of the developer carried on the area unit of the mentioned developer transfer element after the mentioned adjusting element is passed, a clearance SB (mm) between the free end of the mentioned adjusting element and the mentioned developer transfer element, the density G (mg/mm³) of the developer, a coefficient which is a groove content coefficient on the surface of the mentioned developer transfer element and the depth D (mm) of the groove satisfy the conditions: 0.1≤M S (mg/mm²)≤0.5, 0.2≤SB (mm), and M/S (mg/mm)×1/4≤α×{SB (mm)+D (mm)}×G (mg/mm³)<M/S (mg/mm²).

EFFECT: providing a development device which does not suffer from a problem caused by excessive or insufficient transfer efficiency of the developer transfer element due to the fact that the developer transfer element is unsatisfactorily coated with the developer or foreign substances are stuck in the clearance between the peripheral surface of the developer transfer element and the development device developer adjusting element, a developer layer is formed on the peripheral surface of the developer transfer element, thin enough to produce an image of very high quality.
