FIELD: medicine.
SUBSTANCE: system and method for treating a layer of epithelial tissue are proposed. The system comprises a reservoir for containing a certain amount of fluid, configured to allow the medium to contact the surface of the epithelial tissue layer, when it is contained in the reservoir, a light source for generating a laser beam for at least a predetermined pulse duration, as well as an optical system for focusing laser beam into a focal spot and for locating the focal spot in the target position. The target position of the focal spot is within the reservoir and within the medium and at a distance of less than 3 mm from the surface of the epithelial tissue layer, when it is contained in the reservoir, and the size of the focal spot and the power of the generated laser beam are such that in the focal spot the laser beam has a power density which exceeds the characteristic threshold value for this medium, above which laser-induced optical breakdown in a medium occurs at a given pulse duration.
EFFECT: more distinct effect when exposed to tissue.
