FIELD: metallurgy.
SUBSTANCE: method involves reacting a titanium chloride compound and a reducing metal in a molten chloride salt in a continuous-flow reactor with back-mixing and obtaining a free-flowing suspension of titanium powder in the molten chloride salt. The titanium chloride compound and the reducing metal are dissolved in a molten chloride salt comprising seed crystals in the form of suspended titanium powder and fed to the said reactor containing a chloride salt of a reducing metal. The average ratio of titanium chloride compound and reducing metal fed to the reactor is set to within 1% of the stoichiometric ratio required for complete reduction of the titanium chloride salt to metallic crystalline titanium. In the reactor, the concentration of titanium powder in the free-flowing suspension of titanium powder in the molten salt is from 2 to 23 wt %. Lithium, sodium, magnesium or calcium are used as the reducing metal.
EFFECT: production of a powder containing mono crystals or agglomerates of mono crystals with an average size of mono crystal of more than 1 mcm in volume.
