SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the catalytically active component of the catalyst, which includes single-phase oxides based on mixed oxide systems of yttrium-gadolinium ortocobaltate and to the method of oxidating ammonia in the Ostwald's process, in which a gas mixture containing ammonia and oxygen is subjected to conversion in the presence of the specified catalyst. The catalytically active component of the catalyst for the oxidation of ammonia contains stable single-phase oxides based on the oxide system of mixed orthogonality yttrium-gadolinium with a formula YY1-XGdXCo1-YMYO3, where X is greater than 0 and less than 1, Y is greater than or equal to 0 and less than 1, and M is metal selected from the group consisting of manganese, iron, chromium, vanadium and titanium, aluminium, transition metal, or alkaline-earth metal.

EFFECT: high selectivity and low level of formation of unwanted nitrogen oxide under conditions corresponding to industrial oxidation.
