FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: two-dimensional ultrasonic matrix converter receives echo signals from increasing depths of the volume domain. The 2D matrix is configured into the surface areas of the elements that are processed by the beam microformer, and the summed signals from the surface area are input to the ultrasonic beam driver channel. At the shallower depth, the 2D matrix receives echoes from small surface areas at the center of the aperture. As signals are received from increasing depths, the aperture is increased by symmetrically adding the surface areas of successively increasing dimensions on each side from small areas of the surface at the center.

EFFECT: inventive method can improve the multi-linear operation of both the 1D and the 2D matrix sensors.
