SUBSTANCE: device (102, 202) comprises an optical distance measuring device (104, 204, 304) and fastening means (106, 206, 306a-306c) that elastically attach the optical distance measurement device (104, 204, 304) to the gripping device. The fastening means comprise an upper part and two hollow support pieces extending downwardly from the upper part in a vertical direction and having elastic parts at their lower ends. The optical device is attached to the fastening means by means of the said elastic parts. The gripping device (102, 202) may be provided in a crane, such as a jib crane, a bridge crane, a container crane or a gantry crane.

EFFECT: reduced vibration and accuracy of a constant level when moving a container.
