SUBSTANCE: staple cartridge assembly includes a compressible tissue thickness compensator and a cartridge housing with a support portion with a plurality of staple sockets with holes. At least a part of each staple is stored inside the staple socket. Each staple is movable between the non-activated position and the activated position and is deformable between the non-activated configuration and the activated configuration. The compressible tissue thickness compensator is adapted to be grasped within the staples and at least partially covers the holes of the staple sockets. The compressible compensator has an ability to assume different heights in the compressed state within different staples and contains lyophilized foam with a hydrophobic agent.
