FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: in a method for identifying a symbol region in a word region, performing a binarization of the word region to obtain a binarized word region, wherein the word region includes several words belonging to the same row. The histogram is calculated in the vertical direction for the binarized word region, wherein the histogram includes the abscissas of the pixels in each column and the accumulated value of the foreground colour pixels for the pixels in each column. The symbol region of each word is identified in the word region according to the accumulated value distribution information in the histogram. Herewith the identification includes the determination of several sets of abscissas according to the distribution of accumulated values on the histogram and for each set of abscissas the definition of the column of pixels where the first abscissa is a left border of the symbol region, and the definition of the column of pixels where the second abscissa is a right border of the symbol region.

EFFECT: increasing the accuracy of determining the position of the symbol region of each word.
