FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of producing an acidic hydroxycodone adduct that comprises hydrogenating an aqueous solution of 14-hydroxycodeinone and acid to produce an acidic hydroxycodone adduct solution, wherein the hydrogenation is carried out at temperatures above 30°C and below 100°C, in the presence of a heterogeneous catalyst comprising a platinum group metal (PGM) and hydrogen gas, where the aqueous solution of 14-hydroxycodeinone and acid is heated to the hydrogenation temperature prior to exposure to hydrogen gas, and wherein the acidic adduct solution of oxycodone contains 6α-oxycodol in an amount corresponding to ≤0.800% of the area as determined by HPLC, wherein acid is selected from the group consisting of acetic acid, phosphoric acid, citric acid, tartaric acid, oxalic acid, hydrochloric acid, hydrobromic acid and a mixture thereof, and wherein the resulting acidic oxycodone adduct corresponds to acid used in the reaction.

EFFECT: new method is developed for the production of an acidic oxycodone adduct that is suitable for large-scale or industrial production of oxycodone alkaloid and oxycodone salts.
