SUBSTANCE: there are provided steps in which the first request for storing the first data block in the data storage device connected to the host is received; calculating, using the hardware accelerator in the data storage device, the first message digest for the first data unit in response to receiving the first instruction for calculating the first message digest in combination with executing the first save request, storing the first data block on the information storage medium of the data storage device; receiving a second request for storing the second data block in the data storage device; calculating by using a hardware accelerator a second message digest for the second data block in response to receiving a second instruction for calculating a second message digest in conjunction with executing the second storage request; storing a second data block on the storage medium in the data storage device; and transmitting the first and second message digests to the host to enable the host to compare the first message digest and the second message digest to detect duplication of the data blocks.
