SUBSTANCE: communication system comprises communication nodes that form a mesh network in which each of the nodes periodically transmits a network environment discovery message to neighbouring nodes, through a shared transmission resource available to all nodes, to discover connections between them. Each of the nodes listens to the environment used as the shared transfer media carrier to determine the availability of the given environment, and the nodes of the mesh network node are used as repeaters for the propagation of broadcast messages of topological information. The communication method includes the following steps: each of the nodes detects collisions in the environment during listening, calculates a metric based on the number of collisions detected, writes the metric to the first field of the network environment discovery message transmitted by the node, receives network environment discovery messages from neighbouring nodes, compares its metric with the metric of neighbouring nodes; the node is added to the subset depending on the result of the comparison.
