SUBSTANCE: invention relates to oil industry. Method for developing a high viscosity oil or bitumen field includes the construction of pairs of horizontal production and injection wells located one above the other, as well as vertical observation wells, injection of coolant through injection wells with heating of the reservoir and creation of a steam chamber, product is extracted by steam-gravity drainage via production wells, steam chamber conditions being monitored. Development of a high-viscosity oil field is carried out by adjusting the current size of the steam chamber by changing the volumes of injection of coolant into the injection wells and collecting liquid from the producing wells with control of the volume of the steam chamber. Construction of additional vertical wells at a distance to the production wells is provided for the injection of the working agent, which ensures the creation of a hydrodynamic connection, wherein additional vertical wells are built after lowering the bottomhole pressure in production wells for 3–6 months by 20–70 % at a distance from the production wells, preventing the breakthrough of the working agent and providing a hydrodynamic connection prior to injection of the working agent. Additional vertical wells are opened over the entire thickness of the reservoir above the level located 0.5 m below the lower production well. Water is used as the working agent, which is injected into additional vertical wells in a volume that does not exceed the difference in the total volumes of produced liquid from production wells that are hydrodynamically connected to the corresponding additional vertical wells and the injected coolant-steam into the injection wells located above said production wells.

EFFECT: prevention of lowering of bottomhole pressure in horizontal producing wells, reduction of thermal energy costs, faster collection of recoverable reserves, increase in oil recovery factor.
