FIELD: separation; mixing.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the selectivation of adsorbents for the separation of gases, in particular to a method for separating gases. Method comprises bringing an adsorbent or membrane containing a zeolite with 8-membered rings or a microporous material with 8-membered rings into contact with a barrier compound under conditions effective for selectivation of an adsorbent or membrane comprising a temperature of from 50 to 350°C and a total pressure of 690 to 13.8 MPa g, where selectivation of the adsorbent or membrane involves diffusion of the barrier compound molecule through the porous structure of the microporous material with 8-membered rings, bringing the selectivated adsorbent or membrane into contact with the incoming gas stream containing a first component and a second component to form a first gas stream rich in the first component relative to the incoming gas stream and collecting a second gas stream rich in the second component relative to the incoming stream gas stream. Barrier compound has a minimum molecule size which is 0.4 Å larger than the largest solid sphere that can diffuse along any direction in the adsorbent and a maximum dimension of 25 Å or less. Barrier compound is present either as a liquid or as a gas with a partial pressure of the barrier compound of 10% of the saturated vapour pressure.

EFFECT: invention provides increases selectivity of the adsorbent material.
