FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to a process for the preparation of 2-ethylhexenal, which is used as a raw material for the preparation of 2-ethylhexanol – a plasticizing additive for PVC composites. Method comprises condensing n-butanal on a heterogeneous catalyst at an elevated temperature and then separating the reaction products. Catalyst used is a metal silicate or a mixture of metal silicates with a zeolite structure having a composition TxOy*(10-1,000)SiO2, where T – elements selected from Ta, Zr, Ti, Nb, Fe, B, Ga, Sn, x=1, 2, y=2, 3, 5, not containing Al atoms in the skeleton, and the process is carried out at 80–260 °C.

EFFECT: proposed process provides high selectivity and conversion rates with high catalyst stability over time.
