SUBSTANCE: invention relates to method of treating chronic cough such as idiopathic or treatment resistant cough, method for reducing neuronal hypersensitivity underlying acute, subacute or chronic cough, and method for treating cough or irresistible desire to clear throat associated with respiratory disease. Each of these methods comprises administering an effective amount of compound of formula (I) (I) or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. In the compounds of formula (I), R¹ is hydrogen or optionally substituted with halogen atoms C₁-C₆alkyl, propynyl, and R² denotes C₁-C₆alkyl; C₂-C₆alkenyl; amino; aminosulfonyl; C₁-C₆alkylaminosulfonyl; halogen; amide selected from aminocarbonyl, di(C₁-C₆alkyl)aminocarbonyl, aminocarbonylamino, C₁-C₆alkylcarbonylamino or C₁-C₆alkylaminocarbonylamino, phenylaminocarbonylamino, carbonylamino; haloC₁-C₆alkyl; C₁-C₆alkoxy; haloC₁-C₆alkoxy; nitro; oxy-C₁-C₆-alkyl; C₁-C₆-alkoxyC₁-C₆alkyl; C₁-C₆alkylsulfonyl; cyano or C₁-C₆alkylcarbonyl.
