FIELD: biotechnology.
SUBSTANCE: group of inventions relates to biotechnology, namely to a lactic acid composition and its use for producing polylactic acid and lactide. Lactic acid composition suitable as a starting material for producing polylactic acid and lactide includes lactic acid, a 90 % aqueous solution of which contains methanol in a concentration of not more than 70 ppm, pyruvic acid in a concentration of not more than 500 ppm, furfural at a concentration of not more than 15 ppm, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural at a concentration of not more than 15 ppm, methyl lactate in a concentration of not more than 600 ppm, acetic acid in a concentration of not more than 500 ppm and 2-hydroxybutyric acid in a concentration of not more than 500 ppm.
EFFECT: use of said composition provides producing polylactic acid having excellent physical properties by average molecular weight, heat weight loss rate and degree of staining, and also obtaining lactide showing a high yield and low degree of staining.
