SUBSTANCE: invention relates to means for encoding and decoding a coding unit of an image according to a palette. Method comprises generating each index of the block of indices related to the coding unit from the palette based on corresponding encoding parameters. If indices of the block of indices cannot be generated from the palette for at least one pixel of the coding unit, generating index values corresponding to escape values for replacing said indices of the block of indices which cannot be generated, wherein encoding parameters corresponding to an index are determined according to the spatial neighbourhood of said pixel relative to an encoding order.

EFFECT: technical result is high efficiency of the palette coding mode.
