FIELD: biochemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention provides a method of culturing isolated cells derived from human umbilical cord tissue in a culture medium containing amino acids, vitamins, salts, nucleosides, insulin, transferrin, ethanolamine and sodium selenite, where the culture medium is enriched with serum. Method includes the addition of a serum-free nutrient solution containing amino acids, vitamins, salts, nucleotides, insulin, transferrin, ethanolamine and sodium selenite, growing cells for a sufficient period of time to allow the cells to reach the desired final population density, wherein cells derived from human umbilical cord tissue are isolated from human umbilical cord tissue substantially free of blood, capable of self-renewing and replicating in culture, having differentiation potential, expressing CD13, CD90 and HLA-ABC and not expressing CD34, CD117, and HLA-DR.
EFFECT: method allows the growth of cells derived from human umbilical cord tissue to grow.
