FIELD: transportation.

SUBSTANCE: group of inventions relates to versions of an airbag system and a method for operation thereof. Airbag is fixed near the far end of the front side member. When in an inflated condition, the airbag has an angular leading edge. Impact detection sensor generates a signal upon an impact, then a controller processes said signal and, upon determining whether a predetermined level of severity of the collision has been reached, actuates an airbag inflator by an electric drive. Angular leading edge of the airbag in the inflated condition comes into contact with the offset rigid barrier, thereby generating a lateral force against the offset rigid barrier to push the motor vehicle away from the barrier, and thereby redirect impact energy by lateral movement of the motor vehicle.

EFFECT: improving safety by reducing the passage of a barrier into the vehicle when its front corner collides with a rigid barrier with a small offset.
