SUBSTANCE: group of inventions relates to embodiments of a vehicle airbag system and a method of operating an airbag controller. Airbag includes at least one tether attached to first and second walls of the airbag. Each tether includes a tear seam detachable when the airbag is inflated with a pressure higher than a predetermined pressure. In another embodiment, the airbag includes at least a first tether and a second tether, each attached to the first and second airbag walls, wherein the first tether includes a tear seam detachable when the airbag is inflated with a pressure higher than a predetermined pressure. System also comprises a controller used for determining whether to inflate an airbag with high pressure or low pressure depending on whether a detected impact is oblique.
