SUBSTANCE: inventions relate to an edible animal chew, as well as to a method for producing said edible animal chew. Edible animal chew comprises a starch content of 50 to 75% relative to the total weight of the chew, wherein the starch content comprises less than 28 wt% amylose, and wherein the starch content comprises potato starch content of 5 to 20 wt% relative to the total weight of the chew; a humectant content of 10 to 20 wt% relative to the total weight of the chew, and a density of 1.0 g cm-3 or less. Method for producing edible animal chew includes steps of: a) mixing ingredients comprising a starch content of 50 to 75 wt% and a humectant content of 10 to 20 wt% to form an edible animal chew mixture; b) gelatinising at least a portion of the starch contained in the mixture; c) extruding the composition out of an extruder so that it leaves the extruder at a temperature of 100°C or higher; and d) allowing the composition to expand to a density of 1.0 g cm-3 or less to produce the edible animal chew.
EFFECT: inventions allow to effectively maintain animal oral health.
