SUBSTANCE: group of inventions relates to methods for detecting and determining the level of dental plaque and/or injuries in domestic animals. Disclosed is a method for detecting and quantifying a substrate in the oral cavity of a wakeful subject, involving the following steps: (i) obtaining one or more shots of one or more teeth in a waking tested subject using a snapshot device which is configured to detect fluorescence; (ii) analysing the images and (iii) quantifying the coating with the substrate on each tooth of each individual, wherein the test subject is a companion animal. What is also presented is a method involving additionally the following stages: administration of the test composition to the test subject and the control subject during the test; obtaining one or more images of one or more teeth the same as at step (i), both in the test subject and the control subject through predetermined intervals during the test; analysing images for determining and quantifying the coating and substrate size on each tooth of each test subject and comparing with the images at the beginning of the test and/or at each stage of the test; comparing the substrate coating of one or more teeth of the test subject and the control subject and determining the efficacy of the analysed composition with respect to reducing, preventing and/or treating the oral substrate and/or periodontal diseases in the individual. Also disclosed is the use of fluorescence in a wakeful subject to determine the presence or amount of dental plaque on one or more teeth to determine the effectiveness of the test compositions during the test, where the subject is a companion animal.
