SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to a process for treating petrol containing diolefins, olefins and sulphur compounds, including mercaptans, consisting of treating petrol in the presence of hydrogen in distillation column (2) comprising at least one reaction zone (3) comprising at least one catalyst, the catalyst being in the form of a sulphide and comprising a support consisting of gamma or delta alumina with a specific surface area of 70 to 350 m2/g, the weight content of the oxide of the Group VIb element ranges from 1 to 30 wt% of the total weight of the catalyst, the weight content of nickel oxide ranges from 1 to 30 wt% of the total weight of the catalyst, the degree of sulphuration of the metals forming part of said catalyst is greater than or equal to 60%, the molar ratio of Group VIII metal to Group VIb metal is 0.6 to 3 mol/mol, wherein the method comprises: feeding petrol into the distillation column at a level below reaction zone (3) to separate the light fraction of desulphurised petrol at a point located above the reaction zone, and obtaining in the bottom of the column a heavy petrol fraction containing most of the sulphur compounds; and contacting petrol withdrawn at the head of the catalytic column with a catalyst from reaction zone (3) and hydrogen to produce a desulphurised light petrol fraction.

EFFECT: method makes it possible to obtain light petrol with a very low sulphur content.
