SUBSTANCE: present application relates to an apparatus for generating steam. It comprises water inlet (19), evaporation surface (24) and heater (26) disposed adjacent to evaporation surface (24) to heat evaporation surface (24) to a predetermined temperature, such as that water fed onto evaporation surface (24) via water inlet (19) forms a film on evaporation surface (24) and evaporates. Apparatus is configured so that water is fed to one or more regions of evaporation surface (24) and the temperature of the water fed onto evaporation surface (24) is lower than the predetermined temperature, so that scale on one or each region of evaporation surface (24) to which water is fed cools at a different rate at which water on a remainder of evaporation surface (24) cools.
EFFECT: this causes scale on evaporation surface (24) to break apart and be dislodged from evaporation surface (24).
