FIELD: biotechnology.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to formation of a biopolymer of plant origin - melanin, which has a high biological activity, and can be used for formation of therapeutic and prophylactic drugs, biologically active and food additives. Method for producing melanin from sunflower husks includes washing the water with unmilled husks of sunflower, extracting 0.5–1.0 M sodium hydroxide solution at 100 °C, filtration, treatment of the extract with cation exchanger KU-2 with adjusting the pH to 1.5, isolating the desired product by filtration and drying. Extraction is carried out at a mass ratio of a husk-extractant 1:6–7 in a vibrational extraction unit of 30–45 minutes.

EFFECT: invention provides increase in efficiency of the use of raw materials, an increase in the yield of melanin by 2½ to 3 times and an increase in its purity with an increase in the duration of storage without changing the properties.
