FIELD: technological processes.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the production processes of acetic acid, namely, to control the water content in processes for producing acetic acid. Method for controlling the concentration of water downstream in a production process of acetic acid comprises methanol and carbon monoxide reaction in a reaction medium under carbonylation conditions sufficient to form a carbonylation product containing acetic acid, wherein the reaction medium comprises: a carbonylation catalyst; a water upstream concentration of 1 to 14 % by weight; tertiary phosphine oxide; extraction of acetic acid from the carbonylation product; and controlling a downstream water concentration by determining the calculated water concentration and introducing a tertiary phosphine oxide into the reaction medium at a rate, basicity, concentration or a combination thereof sufficient to provide a downstream water concentration of 1 % by weight of the calculated water concentration; wherein the tertiary phosphine oxide is a mixture of compounds of at least four phosphine oxides wherein each phosphine oxide has the formula OPX3, where O is oxygen, P is phosphorus, and X is independently selected from C4-C18 alkyls.

EFFECT: method for controlling the water content in the production processes of acetic acid is proposed.
