Prediction image decoding apparatus in which the encoded prediction information data is extracted to indicate a prediction method, which should be used in the prediction of the target area signal and the encoded residual signal data, from the compressed image data obtained by dividing the image into a plurality of areas and encoding the area image data; motion information is restored and stored based on encoded prediction information data; a predicted prediction area signal is generated in the target area based on the restored motion information; reconstructed residual signal of the target area is restored; and a reconstructed pixel signal of the target area is generated based on the predicted signal and the reconstructed residual signal and stored as a previously reconstructed signal.
