FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method for catalytic conversion of material containing at least one alkylatable aromatic compound and an alkylating agent to form a conversion product containing an alkyl aromatic compound, the method comprising a step of reacting said material at least in a partially liquid phase under catalytic conversion conditions, which include a molar ratio of the alkylatable aromatic compound to the alkylating agent of 0.1:1 to 100:1, hourly average feeding rate of the material with respect to the alkylating agent of 0.1 to 500 h-1, with a catalytic composition containing a porous crystalline substance having a FAU, *BEA or MWW structure or a mixture thereof, improvement, which includes modifying said catalytic composition so that said composition has activity, measured as RA220 at 220°C, of 7.5 to 30, or RA180 at 180°C, of 2.5 to 10, wherein said catalytic conversion conditions include a temperature approximately lower than 270°C and pressure of about 450 lbf/in2 excess (3102 kPa) or lower, and where the pressure of feeding said alkylating agent is equal to 450 lbf/in2 excess (3102 kPa) or lower, where said relative activity denotes percentage increase in temperature in an adiabatic tubular reactor, having one or more thermocouples, divided by the length of the layer expressed as a percentage with respect to the position of said thermocouples in said reactor.
