FIELD: metallurgy.
SUBSTANCE: group of inventions relates to the production of a metal powder having a chromium content of at least 90 % by weight. Method comprises heating and reducing at least one compound from the group, containing chromium oxide and chromium hydroxide, possibly with an admixture of a solid carbon source, under the influence, at least temporarily, of hydrogen and hydrocarbon. Method is characterized in that the heating is carried out to a temperature TR, where 1,100 °C≤TR≤1,550 °C, at least during the heating operation, the partial pressure of the hydrocarbon is at least temporarily 0.5 to 50 KPa (5 to 500 mbar). Resulting metal powder has a HIT nanohardness of 0.005/5/1/5 according to EN ISO 14577-1, ≤4 GPa, and the pre-firing strength, measured according to ASTM B312-09, of at least 7 MPa at a pressing pressure of 550 MPa.
EFFECT: possibility to obtain a metal powder with a high degree of purity is provided.
