SUBSTANCE: various embodiments of the present invention relate to cellulosic fibers with an improved surface, to various products containing cellulose fibers with an improved surface, and methods and systems for producing cellulosic fibers with an improved surface. Various embodiments of the improved surface cellulosic fibers have a significantly increased surface area as compared to conventional refined fibers, with the advantage of minimizing the reduction in length after refining. In some embodiments, a plurality of improved surface cellulosic fibers have a linear weight average fiber length of at least about 0.3 mm and an average hydrodynamic specific surface area of at least about 10 m2/g, where the number of cellulose fibers with an improved surface is at least 12,000 fibers/mg in terms of dry matter (oven drying).

EFFECT: cellulosic fibers with an improved surface can be introduced into a series of products that can gain from such properties, including, for example, paper products, paper board products, fiber cement slabs, fiber reinforced plastics, fluff pulps, hydrogels, cellulose acetate products and carboxymethylcellulose products.
