FIELD: technological processes.

SUBSTANCE: present invention provides a molded catalyst for use in the preparation of methyl methacrylate. This shaped catalyst comprises a synthetic faujasite zeolite and a magnesium silicate laminate, the sulfur content of said magnesium silicate layer being 0.10 % by weight or less. Also provided is a process for the preparation of methyl methacrylate, which comprises the step of conducting a gas-phase catalytic reaction of methyl-α-hydroxy isobutyrate using the above-mentioned shaped catalyst for the preparation of methyl methacrylate. Catalyst has a longer service life in the process for producing methyl methacrylate by a gas phase catalytic reaction using methyl-α-hydroxy isobutyrate as a raw material in comparison with conventional methods.

EFFECT: providing a catalyst that further inhibits the formation of a dimethyl ether by-product caused by the methanol dehydration reaction to prevent a decrease in methanol recovery.
