FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method for manufacturing a cathode block for an electrolytic cell for producing aluminum and to a cathode block of an electrolytic cell for producing aluminum. Method comprises preparing a mixture of starting materials comprising coke and pitch, wherein the coke comprises two types of coke that, during carbonization and/or graphing, and/or cooling, exhibit different behavior with respect to volume change, forming a crude cathode block from the mixture, carbonizing crude cathode block and graphitizing carbonized cathode block, without its preliminary impregnation, to obtain a graphitized cathode block, along with cooling after graphitization, the first grade of coke during carbonization and/or graphitization and/or cooling exhibits a stronger shrinkage and/or expansion than the second grade of coke, thus obtaining a cathode block with a bulk density of the carbon portion of more than 1.68 g/cm3, particularly preferably greater than 1.71 g/cm3, in particular up to 1.75 g/cm3. Cathode block of an electrolytic cell for producing aluminum obtained using the claimed process is also disclosed.

EFFECT: provides increased resistance to thermal stresses and emerging defects and reduces the time spent on production and the share of cathode blocks.
