SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to a bench detection device and to a bench detection method for detecting benches on a road surface. Bench detection device determines the distance and direction relative to the road surface around the vehicle. Distance sensor mounted on the vehicle specifies the first position for determining the bench and the second position for determining the bench on the road surface. Then, the bench detection device calculates changes in the height of the road surfaces in the first position of determining the bench and the second position of determining the bench based on the distance and directions relative to the road surface and detects the bench on the road surface based on one of the positions of determining benches. Wherein the gradient of change in the height of the road surface in one of them is greater.
EFFECT: increased accuracy of detecting the bench position on the road surface.
