SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the use of a heteropolyoxometalate of formulae (I), (II) or (III) A_q+3PV_qZ_12-qO₄₀ (I), A₆P₂Z₁₈O₆₂ (II) or A₃PZ₄O₂₄ (III) in which Z is selected from the group consisting of Mo or W, q = 0, 1, 2 or 3, and A is selected from among one or more cations and contains at least one cation selected from the group consisting of quaternary ammonium cations, quaternary phosphonium cations and tertiary sulfonium cations, to impart at least a portion of the substrate or surface of the substrate, or a coating of disinfectant, self-disinfecting and antimicrobial characteristics. Also, heteropolyoxometalate and a support, a surface layer, a paint or a coating containing a heteropolyoxometalate are proposed.

EFFECT: heteropolyoxometalate of formulae (I), (II) or (III) has excellent antimicrobial activity, which makes it possible to use it to prevent microbiological contamination.
