FIELD: electrical communication engineering.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to means for compressing and decompressing a representation based on higher order ambisonics. For the current frame, a set of dominant directions and a corresponding set of indices of the detected directed signals are evaluated. Non-fixed number of directional signals with the corresponding directions contained in said set of dominant direction estimates are separated from the HOA coefficients of said current frame and with a corresponding delayed set of index data of said directed signals, wherein said non-fixed number is less than said fixed number. Directional signals and sequences of HOA coefficients of the surrounding HOA component are assigned to channels whose number corresponds to a fixed number, with a delayed data set of directional signal indices and a set of index data of a reduced number of ambient sequences of HOA coefficients used for the assignment. Channels of the associated frame are perceptually coded so as to provide an encoded compressed frame.

EFFECT: technical result is to increase the compression efficiency.
