FIELD: electricity.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to separator mats that are used in batteries for physical separation and electrical isolation of positive and negative battery electrodes. Separator in the form of an absorbent glass mat for a lead-acid battery comprises a nonwoven fibre mat placed between the electrodes of the battery. Nonwoven fibre mat comprises: a) a plurality of entangled fine fibres, the plurality of entangled fine glass fibres comprising fibres having a diameter between about 0.05 and 5 mcm; b) a plurality of coarse fibres blended with the plurality of entangled fine glass fibres, the plurality of coarse fibres comprising fibres having a diameter between about 8 and 20 mcm; and c) an acid resistant binder that couples the plurality of entangled fine glass fibres with the plurality of coarse fibres to form the nonwoven fibre mat. Nonwoven fibre mat contains 60% or more of fine glass fibres, 40% or less of coarse glass fibres and 0.5-15% by weight of an acid resistant binder. Nonwoven fibre mat has a thickness of 0.381 mm to 2.03 mm.
EFFECT: invention makes it possible to create a separator having higher strength.
