SUBSTANCE: invention relates to audio coding, more particularly to analyzing and matching the characteristics of input signals for encoding. In the method, the embodiment that is to be performed by the decoder comprises for the frame m: determining the stability value D(m) based on the difference, in the conversion region between the spectral envelope range of the frame m and the corresponding spectral envelope range of the adjacent frame m-1. Each such range contains a set of quantized spectral envelope values associated with energy in the bands of the audio signal segment. Also, the method involves the selection of a decoding mode from a plurality of decoding modes, based on the stability value D(m) and applying the selected decoding mode.
EFFECT: improving the quality of the restored audio signal.
