FIELD: data processing.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to means of classifying and encoding audio signals. Determining the stability value D(m) based on the difference in the transformation region, between the range of the spectral envelope of frame m and the corresponding range of the spectral envelope of the adjacent frame m-1. Each range contains a set of quantised spectral envelope values associated with energy in the audio signal segment spectrum bands. Decoding mode is selected from a plurality of decoding modes based on the stability value D(m). Selected decoding mode is applied. Stability value D(m) is subjected to low-pass filtering, thereby achieving a filtered stability value. Filtered stability value is converted to a scalar range [0,1] by using a sigmoidal function, thereby achieving a stability parameter S(m). Decoding mode selection is based on the stability parameter S(m).

EFFECT: improvement of coding efficiency.
