FIELD: chemistry; technological processes.
SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to a process of the preparation of a diester of terephthalic acid by reacting terephthalic acid with at least one alcohol, wherein a) terephthalic acid is suspended in an alcohol in a dispersing vessel, a pre-suspension is obtained, b) said pre-suspension from the dispersing vessel is fed to the reactor and reacted in the presence of an esterification catalyst and c) the reaction water is distilled off along with the vapor in the form of an aqueous alcoholic azeotrope, the evaporation is at least partially condensed, the condensate is separated into an aqueous phase and an organic phase, the organic phase is dewatered and said dewatered organic phase is at least partially fed to the dispersing vessel and the alcohol is selected from linear, branched or cyclic mono-atoms having 4 to 18 carbon atoms or aromatic mono-alcohols.
EFFECT: method makes it possible to achieve complete conversion of terephthalic acid.
