FIELD: engines and pumps.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to purification of internal combustion engine exhaust gases. Methods and systems are proposed for estimating the amount of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) gases flowing from the exhaust duct to the intake channel of the engine system by operating the oxygen sensor in the exhaust gases in the AC voltage mode. In one example, the method comprises the step of, during operation of the oxygen sensor in the exhaust gas in the AC mode, in which the reference voltage of the oxygen sensor in the exhaust gases is controlled from a lower first voltage to a higher second voltage, regulate the operation of the engine depending on the amount of EGR gases estimated by the output signal of the oxygen sensor in the exhaust gases and the correction factor determined depending on the second voltage.

EFFECT: oxygen sensor in the exhaust gases can be used to compensate for fluctuations that arise due to changes in the fuel composition and humidity of the environment, as well as estimating the amount of EGR gases recycled in the system, and thereby improving fuel delivery to the engine and regulating the EGR.
