FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the production of tungsten carbide nanopowder. Method comprises the reduction and carbidization of tungsten trioxide (WO3) in the thermal plasma of an arc plasma generator to produce tungsten carbide (WC) nanoparticles. Mixture containing 65.0–70.0 wt% of the tungsten trioxide powder and 30.0–35.0 wt% of graphite as a reducing agent and a carbidizer is prepared. Resultant mixture is ground to obtain a consistent powder with particle sizes of less than 30 mcm. Reduction and carbidization of tungsten trioxide is carried out by feeding a flow of inert plasma-forming gas with a powder sprayed therein into the thermal plasma of an arc plasma generator with a temperature of 10,000–12,000 K at the outlet of the plasma generator. Preparation of tungsten carbide nanoparticles is provided by crystallization on the walls of the plasma generator.
EFFECT: increased physicomechanical properties of tungsten carbide, which allow it to be used to produce hard alloys, are provided.
