FIELD: acoustics.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to acoustics, in particular to methods for processing acoustic signals. Method of generating sound comprises measuring background noise, using a perceptual loudness model to predict sound audibility in the presence of the measured background noise and predicting a first threshold value at which the target sound becomes audible to the user, and predicting how the audibility of the target sound increases for the user when the volume of the target sound is increased. Then, a perceptual loudness model is used to determine the gain. Method comprises predicting how the audibility of the sound increases for the user when the volume of the target sound increases. Then, a gain value is determined that is suitable for a certain level or volume level required for the target sound, a certain gain value is applied to the source signal to generate a modified source signal and the target sound is generated using the modified source signal. At the step of generating the target sound, sound is measured, the source signal for the target sound is filtered or subtracted from the measured sound.
EFFECT: reduction of potential negative effects of alarm sounds on patients and medical personnel.
